The windows in need of HELP pics...

OK here are some of the windows on the first floor....

Please keep in mind I have yet to decorate..thus, the crap & nick knacks sitting around in the windows....

I don't know where to start!

The living room /dining room are pretty open... as is the kitchen. Do I stick with one type of window treatment & carry it through?

As you see, the house is VANILLA... actually the color is CAPPUCINO...but I think it is very vanilla & very PLAIN...
We agreed to keep it light because of the very dark LONG Norwegian winters......

But, I want it to feel cozy & a home...

I think the windows would be a good place to warm things up & add some color... No?

Problem... 3 different sized windows... Should I try to hide the difference? is that possible?

I'm no help in the window department - but I have to say, all the wood in the house looks beautiful!!! Are the ceilings even wood? GORGEOUS!

My SIL just posted a blog about one type of homemade window treatments. They're good for diffusing sunlight, but do not open and close. They are literally covers, but made of light material, so they do not darken the room. My MIL has them and they are very nice. Here's the link Window covers. Good luck! I am crafty, but no good with window treatments!

Lovin the house! It looks so open. I guess before giving any advice on the windows I'd ask a few questions.
1. Do you like a lot of light?
2. Does the room get a lot of natural light?
3. I don't know your style but I think the European style curtains that only go half way up the window on the larger window would be pretty. It really depends on the look you are going for and if you want to keep it light and bright both in texture and lighting too. Let me know and I can give a little more feedback.

Bjørn & I were talking about it tonight...I think for the windows on the front of the house we are going to put the roll up material things white... so it looks nice from the street..... (not sure what they are called in English)
But I still think I need something to finish the blinds offa little color or a cap of some sort? I DUNNO!

Wow, your home is gorgeous! I would agree that you should make some decisions as to what feel you're going for. Do you want a dramatically different color, or do you just want something more subtle, but still warming? An easy (and often less expensive) alternative to traditional curtains would be a fabric shower curtain. The biggest problem there is that there's only one size. Also, sheets do tend to be the least expensive way to go for large quantities of fabric. Also, if you don't want to sew at all, fabric glue and/or stitch-witchery are both awsome and super super easy :)

Ok, knowing you like and want a lot of light I would either stick with something with color that is sheer/thin and allows light to pass through or something like the ones I have in my bedroom, dining room and living room. You can place them as close to the ceiling as you like to allow for the most amount of light plus they add color and hight to a room. Or, when I lived in Italy I loved the lacey ones. The markets have a plethera of styles so you don't have to look granny or anything. Some of the curtains are able to be cut to size and hung w/o sewing. This would be a nice option. However, it might limit the colors.
Are you familiar with a style of hand stitching called Hardanger? It's done in Norway or maybe Sweeden. It's a type of stitching that would be gorgeous in the windows of your home. Here are some examples of table runners and such. Maybe you could find some curtains with hardanger patterns. Who knows, maybe you could find someone there to make the curtains for you with this stitch. http://www.herrschners.com/depts/id-1455.html
Let me know what you think of these ideas. I'll also look through some catalogs for more ideas.

Yes you can hide the window size, just use the same size window treatments in each window. Some people use floor length curtains/drapes just for that reason.

Are the ceilings made of wood or is that just their color?

I came over from SITS.

Try The Nester: http://nestingplacenc.blogspot.com/

She has a ton of ideas for what she calls window mistreatments (because they are so easy).

Use the same length of fabric for all the windows- it will look great.
I have NO skills whatsoever...I thought I had already made this comment, but I don't see it on this post...hmmm...I LOVE the inside of your house though! It is so pretty!

I might need to take a trip to Norway! :)

I agree that the windows would be a perfect place to start. Window treatments, too, would warm it up. I think the different sizes adds character, but then I also enjoy teaching emotionally disturbed adolescent boys, so that should tell you how much stock to put in MY opinion, haha :)

Thanks for poking around today :) It was great to see you.

What a beautiful house! Do you have to have something on the windows?

Hello? Hello gorgeous house with the amazingly shiny hardwood floors.

This is jealous jill here in India with the ugliest tile floors you've ever seen!

I'm with simple answer... do you really need window coverings?

I'm all for subtle walls with a pop of color.

If you must do something - what about a swag over the windows - you do it across the top and then you don't need to worry about the sizes... they can all be the same!

We do have wood EVERY WHERE... wood floors ceilings walls....Thats just what they do here in Norge... I was a bit worried about having different types of woods with the furniture but I think it will be ok..

Now I am starting to wonder about NOT having the windows on the back of the house covered... hmmm... just the swag to make them look finished?

Oh & just FYI everyone I can not get flat sheets here... they don't exsist... (see what I have to deal with!?)

Nicely decorated house!

I'm all for letting the windows stay bare. I love the light and don't mind looking out at night either.

your ceilngs are low - so to make the room look higher - take your drapes to the ceiling, not at the top of the windows.
